About
This Story

About this picture book

"Daniel's Dark Side" is a picture book that delves into the exploration of trauma. It acknowledges the existence of a dark side within each person, a place where happiness seems unreachable and words remain unspoken, buried deep within the heart. Through this picture book, readers are gently encouraged to explore their wounded hearts and rediscover the courage to find happiness.  Projection through the medium of a picture book aids both adults and children in expressing their innermost thoughts.
In the process of growing up, we all inevitably experience hurt. Apologizing isn't easy, but what's even harder is deciding what to do after receiving an apology. Why is it that the one who has done wrong only needs to apologize, while we are expected to forgive? This is something worth pondering. Daniel doesn't make a final decision in the end, instead leaving it to the readers to contemplate the profound journey of forgiveness. Adults reading picture books to children can pause at the page where Daniel's mom asks for his forgiveness  for his father and listen to the children's responses. This picture book delves into an important lesson for our life: how do we, when hurt, learn not to rely on others for happiness anymore? People around us will accompany us, but growth is a journey that only we can complete on our own.

The book is available in both Chinese and English, providing readers with a wider range of accessibility.

"Daniel's Dark Side" originated as a project completed by the author during a university course. At that time, the author printed a dozen or so sheets of illustrations at a copy shop, creating two copies—one for the university professor's evaluation and one for personal keepsake. Unexpectedly, the author's mother, who worked in education, shared the book with her students, profoundly moving countless students and teachers alike. However, only one copy of the book remained. Subsequently, the author pursued a career in professional psychology and realized the applicability of picture books for both adults and children. Recalling the previously created "Daniel's Dark Side," the author discovered it had been lost during a move, with no original files or sheets remaining. Relying on stored photos from their phone, the author recreated "Daniel's Dark Side," once again bringing several dozen sheets of illustrations to a copy shop for scanning, in order to preserve the images. However, the copy shop indicated that producing the book would require significant funds unless mass production was feasible. Therefore, it is hoped that the book can initially be shared as an eBook, facilitating healing for both adults and children through the medium of picture books, with anticipation for the eventual release of physical copies.
